There are number of solutions proposed by different inventors, individuals and institutions for low cost disposal of human excreta to overcome the health hazards that can be caused by open air defecation and can be considered appropriate under the given local conditions and limitations of available finances, materials, skilled labor and water etc. Long back in 1970 one visionary person named Mr Balram Singh paid attention on the bad sanitation condition of India and invented a simple yet effective design for people where sewer lines were not available. He got patent for his invention in the name of Shankar and Balram Septic Tank in 1970 and his family members are still doing business with same design even though the patent has been expired. The trademark and copy right protection of their design is still in force and nobody can use the name Shankar or Balram without their permission, however FRP, Plastic or Polyethylene like Sintex, Concrete or pipe Manufacturers / Construction Companies / Suppliers or installers can use this type of design as patent has been expired and the design is in public domain. Now there is an improvement in Sanitation situation in India but still not satisfactory so professionals from the sanitation field, Engineers, institutions and inventors should think about the low cost sanitation so that people from all walks of life can go for affordable on site waste treatment systems. We are in field of research and development and doing the same too and continuously making efforts to improve the existing methods of sewer disposal to enhance the efficiency. As per the test report of CBRI “Shankar Balram septic Tank Latrine” is absolutely the best solution among all available ones up to year 1995, and was adopted by large numbers of people in India. Director General, Council of Scientific Industrial Research, (CSIR) New Delhi, directed Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee to study the design and to compare its performance with other alternatives and found it suitable for every soil conditions; however some points have not been studied hence the design need improvement. The tests on the samples of effluent were conducted at University of Roorkee under the guidance of Dr. Arvind Kumar, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, and the results are included. The Readymade Septic Tank or Precast Septic Tank design consists of two readymade Precasted RCC Pipe chambers of different diameter and length. One of the Precast chambers is bigger in length, while its diameter depends on the number of the proposed users. It serves the purpose of primary tank. The other readymade chamber may be half or the same length and diameter also changes with the number of purposed uses. It works as subsidiary chamber.
